Red Rhone Varietals
The three primary red grapes of France's Rhone Valley are Mourvèdre, Grenache and the ever popular Syrah, which goes by the moniker of Shiraz in the New World and should not be confused with Petite Sirah. In such Rhone Valley appellations as Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape you'll most likely find all these grapes blended together in a subtly complex wine which hints at floral, mineral and earth tones along with brambly fruit. New World vintners tend to emphasize these grape's more unctuous black fruit qualities along with tar, pepper and spice.
